Actually Harry has a manager who is gay. He has Jeff, Tommy and a gentleman Tom who are his managers. Tom is gay.

Happy Birthday, Fine Line! Have a Louis show! (Seriously, why can’t I get cool shows for my birthday like that??). So today’s been a busy week, huh? 

It is, of course, Fine Line’s anniversary, and the celebration kicked off last night, with a twitter emoji (it's Harrrry! Doing the FL pose so so tiny!) and the DYKWYA website changing. It’s pink and black and blue and white, and now tells us that we’re “loyal” and “marvelous” and “memorable” and “powerful” and “rare” and “real” and “staying six feet apart” (or 70 other lovely options). So either HSHQ got their thesaurus out, or they tuned into Louis’ show last night, because that’s EXACTLY how I would describe it. Anyways, the day started with a Harry sighting! Well, a video from last week that is, of him doing a MakeaWish FaceTime in a blue snapback. And then there was a Harry Lambert interview, where he directly addressed the discourse around Harry’s fashion choices, saying, “Harry will never wear something that he doesn’t want to wear...I always say, 'I‘m not doing my job if I’m making someone wear things' because I just think if someone gets comfortable in what they’re wearing, then it doesn’t matter if I think it looks good.” He went on to say, “There’s never an element of me forcing him to wear anything”. So - TAKE THAT, transphobes! We all recognize that saying “the mean gay man is making Harry look gay/genderqueer” is, uh, a REALLY bad take, right? Anyways, hopefully that’s the end of it, but we all know it won’t be. He also told us that Harry chose the (fake) pearls, asking “can I just wear these every day?” and they were only replaced with real ones after that strand broke, that he tried to get H out of the Vans for the Golden vid but he said nah, and about the Golden and WS videos “I kind of saw it as the same man just in a different place in the world” which, well- yeah? But the implication that that man was not Harry is interesting. Aside from that, we got some more terrible merch from HSHQ (including a shirt that is a glove with legs stuck on it, wtf), a few celebratory tweets from HSHQ, The Forum, Jeff Azoff (there's a theme here lol) etc, AND! A post from Harry himself: “I couldn’t be more grateful for you all continually finding new ways to change my life. Thank you for listening, and for everything else. I love you always, but especially today. H”. What? That’s his name, isn’t it? 

But, of course, H wasn’t the only one celebrating online today! Louis came back and answered some of our questions about the show. The first is that he sold over - are you ready for this? - OVER 160,000 tickets for the show, making it the biggest online show of 2020 by a solo male artist, and the third largest overall of the year. Even the Sun had to admit how “exceptional” that is, describing the show as "the equivalent of eight nights at London’s O2 Arena." Doing the math, this means he raised over $3.1 million from ticket sales alone! HOLY SHIT! Hearing that, Louis came on twitter to say (in reply to a quote by his PR company lmao), “This is truly incredible. No major label, no radio, yet here we are. The feeling of support I get from you all every time I do something is unbelievable. Forever Thankful! And they never see us coming!”. Of course, this incited another round of label discourse, wondering if this means he is still an unsigned artist. Does this simply mean the livestream wasn't put on by a label, yes, does Louis absolutely know about the discourse and is he being deliberate, I would also say unmistakeably yes. Which is not to say we know ELSE it might mean -- is he signed to an indie? Still label shopping and waving how much more they need him than vice versa in the hopefuls' faces? Signed but the contract doesn't start until there's a record in play (which when you negotiate your own contract and establish artistic freedom, as we can be very sure was Louis' priority, is what labels DO - they don’t manage every aspect of an artists career)? Signed by a major label, but shading the FUCK out of Syco about radio play for Walls? What we DO know is that it wasn't a label that put the livestream on, and damn if that doesn’t make it 1000% more badass. “Memorable”, “powerful”, and “rare” indeed! He’s still early in the process of LT2, as he told us yesterday, so we might have to wait a little longer to figure out what’s happening business-wise, but he made sure to tell everyone that his fans were an integral part of his processing the most inspiring way possible: “the power and the magic comes from the people you guys,” I COULD CRY that's MY inspirational leader THANK YOU. He goes on to say “don't undermine your role in all this... together with your support we're unstoppable!” He also called us “fucking relentless” (god knows that's true) as Walls hit the charts AGAIN, and talked about how the money raised will go a long way. “WE did that!!”

And with that, let’s talk a little bit more about last night’s (“bold”, “extraordinary”) show! ‘‘Copy’ is making its rounds on the internet, but YouTube continues to take down recordings of the show, which SUCKS, because everyone should be able to see it! Maybe in a few days when some time has passed, they’ll let it go up without an issue, or maybe they'll answer our pleas (come through one more time Louis!) and put out a DVD (and live album too how about, YES? Yes.), til then there are the downloads going around tumblr! Good thing we got Louis' seal of approval or just imagine the discourse. The ‘H’ shirt Louis was wearing last night is a Reebok shirt, which was being distributed in a few different places, such one where you could get a discount if you used the code ‘HL40’ and another where it was $28, lol. Was it the loudest Louis shirt ever- I mean I would say an unqualified NO but many are voting YES and are reeling so that's really fun! Welcome to the gang guys. Not likely to win any awards for being loud with such incredible competition but still very good SBBing-- Louis was wearing a stuffed bear t shirt in rehearsal pics. When you know you know, I guess! ;) The band is also soaking in the praises (as they should!) and have been re-posting fans’ stories on Instagram all day (as did LTHQ) - cheers, boys! 

Today’s Liam and Roman alarm was ALL us (well, not allll us, Roman did explain that the alarms would feature fans every Sunday, but then he handed the mic over). “Waking up to Liam and Roman is the best thing EVER! I don’t know why it gives me so much serotonin,” said one fan. I do! It’s because Liam is a real, live puppy dog and he’s so genuinely sweet to his fans. Love him lots, but I love him even MORE when he’s ON the advent alarm!

Well, I've been meaning to make a post about this for ages and here's an excuse to do it!

First of all, let's look at the definition of a manager and what managers actually do: 

I think a lot of the Jeff hate comes from a fundamental misunderstanding of what a manager does. They're not some all-powerful being that controls every aspect of a celebrity's life and image. Their main responsibilities are pretty boring: scheduling, hiring and firing, planning, negotiating contracts, etc. Of course Jeff has a seat at the table when it comes to the issues with Harry's branding that we hate. I'm not saying he's free of all responsibility, but he's also not holding all the cards. That's why I use the term "tptb" or, "the powers that be" because there are SO MANY MORE people involved in this than just Jeff. 

Ok, now I will address each of the paragraphs one by one.

1. Why would I hate Jeff for being good at his job? Harry has had incredible success and is accomplishing everything a fan could dream of for their fav. As far as commercial success and general public recognition go, I only WISH that the other boys had a manager like Jeff. Harry's presence on SNL, the Late Late Show, and other fun shows and interviews is because of Jeff! Someone had to book those shows, right? That's a manager's job! And I don't hate Jeff for that, in fact, I love getting content from Harry, so I'm GRATEFUL for that! 

2. Although Jeff definitely has some say in Harry's public image and the things printed about him, the main responsibility of that goes to Harry's PR team, (which, by the way, is also excellent.) The way a PR team operates varies greatly, but oftentimes it's the label itself that does the promo, not the management, or it's some combination of the two. As always, yes, Jeff has a seat at the table in this. But he is not personally calling the Daily Mail asking them to print that Harry is a homewrecker. He's not laying in bed at night thinking up new lies to tell about Harry. There is a team of people involved in that process.

3. Now this is where it gets interesting. The mention of Columbia and Sony is important here because they all work together. They're not working independently. There are meetings with all of them and they move forward together. In fact, in many cases, the manager is supposed to fight for the artist when in negotiations with the label. The manager and the artist are supposed to be on the same side here.

The thing about being "the androgynous singer who dates models" or having an ambiguous sexual orientation is that I honestly think this is the best situation we could have with Harry, given the circumstances. Think about it. For five years, we've had a Very Heterosexual Womanizer Harry who sleeps with ten girls a week. Now as a solo artist, it's like that still exists, but the volume has been turned down like 70%. Harry can't exactly come out as gay the second he leaves the band. 1, it would look weird to completely do a 180 the minute he leaves. He was setting up to be more open about his sexuality and more expressive with himself towards the end of the band ("not that important") and we even see a progression in his clothing style from 2015 to now. 2, he's tied up in all sorts of contracts that would prevent him from being able to just say "I'M GAY!!" and not to mention how it would completely undermine the womanizer image they'd worked so hard to give him. (and would lose them their biggest moneymaking tool: highly publicized fauxmances).  

So imagine you're Jeff. You've been handed this kid whose main selling point is his womanizer personality despite him being in a monogamous gay relationship for 5 years. Harry wants to get out of the strict closeting he's been in for so long, so he goes out of his way to find someone who will give him what he wants. (Remember, Harry sought out Jeff. They hung out for a while before the band even broke up. He was shopping around for better management.) How could you possibly give him what he wants (to be free of closeting) while still maintaining a believable narrative to the gp?? The best possible solution is to let him be free with his self expression, be "unlabeled," and have some winter girlfriends (much less publicized than, say, haylor) to give some justification about who his songs are about. I think Jeff is doing the best he can with the circumstances given to him, and I dare you to figure out a better way to make your client AND your boss (tptb) happy. So yes, before he's Harry's friend, he is his manager, and he has to do the best he can with what he's given. And yes, I do think they're friends at least at a professional level. I mean look at this: 

4. This last point is the most important. Yep, I dislike Jeff because he is a capitalist. The Azoffs are problematic af for lots of reasons. I hate the system as well, but unfortunately, the system still exists (although I have hopes that our boys will burn it to the ground) and under The System, Harry's about as well off as it's possible to be.

Ok so it's been almost 2 days for me I have been reading what others have said on twitter and tumblr stans, I've had the time to process my thoughts and now here is my thoughts I get...

So some people hold their favs on a pedestal which is why those people are the ones SUPER hurt by what happened. We shouldn't have our favs on a pedestal or we will be let down everytime they make a mistake. They are humans just like us and aren't above others we have all made mistakes heck I've made more mistakes then I can count. We love our favs and need to hold them accountable when they do something they shouldn't but like I said their humans and they aren't perfect. A lot of celebs haven't really been following guidelines bc their so out of touch with reality and have quite a lot of privilege [especially if their white] and that is a problem that should definitely be talked about.

It is very sad and disappointing what happened the last few days both of the breaking covid restrictions with everything happening here in California and how this will negatively [ actually already has negatively] effected both Olivia and Harry. A lot are just so confused and hard and just over all tired of all this. Everything we have had to deal with as of late and now this it's just idk gut wrenching knowing all the things families [including my own] have gone through bc of the pandemic and they do THIS.

I 100% agree with people [mostly mean this next part with the twitter stans] calling Harry out for what happened it should be talked about but my issue is with some OT5s not treating each member who didn't follow covid guidelines the same. Some OT5s say they have a lane but there is a difference between having a lane and having said lane on a pedestal while having another member half out the door on supporting them. Example of what I mean their was an OT5 I saw who has a Niall lane and when we got pics of him at a large dinner party with no one wearing masks they defended him to the tooth and nail but with the Harry thing they were so upset and wanted to leave. Another example was an OT5 with a Liam lane fought tooth and nail when we got pics of Liam and Maya surrounded by a ton of people during one of the protests with neither wearing a mask but with the Harry thing they were very upset with him.

You must hold ALL who haven't fullly followed guidelines accountable bc if your giving "your lane" a slap on the wrist and then seeing flames with another member does something then it doesn't seem like you actually care about the problem at hand and you CLEARLY love and support one over another in a negative way. TBH Zayn is the only member who has FULLY followed covid guidelines throughout this entire pandemic and for that I respect him a lot more.

If your a newer stan this PR pap walk is a nightmare to you it's ok it will be ok bc if you talk to an older stan then they will tell you this is sadly not the worst we've been through. 2015 we had to deal with louis close to tears announcing he was going to be a dad when he wasn't and then had the nightmare of 2016 BG stunting every week and Dani pap tuesdays all to hide the fact that Louis is gay. So this is not the worst and to me it's welp another stunt I hope will pass soon.

Thanks to this shitty stunt they pulled Harry has yet another label on to the list of horrible labels GP or media have on him bc of Harry's management. He was already seen as a queerbaiting womanizer and an arrogant ahole who doesn't care much for his fans but now he looks like a homewrecker who sleeps with people to get movie roles. Neither Olivia or Harry will be taken seriously after this when it comes to movies. So I don't know whose idea it was thinking this would help with movie promo bc this helps no one and makes everyone involved look like a piece of shit.

I know the biggest thing that rubed people the wrong way [besides the wedding happening at all] was Harry looking happy and officiating the wedding so now some think Harry is possibly friends and actually likes jeff. But look at it this way we have pics of Harry with the CEO of Sony who EVERYONE knows is basically the devil in disguise who you don't want to mess with. Jeff's dad has ALOT of power in the western music business and when winning an award they said he was like the devil but we all love him WHAT?! MJ and Prince made it clear how BAD the music business is and many dont speak up like they do bc those who speak out it doesn't go well.

Harry has been in and dealing with the music business for almost a decade joining when he was only 16 he must have learned by now how things work and how he has to act and play apart where it seems like he likes these people bc Hollywood is all about pretending, with fake smiles and fake lives. To think it's not possible he was acting when he has 10 years of expereince of faking being happy in the business is not a stretch. When he was only 16/17 you saw him cry and be insecure now he has learned how to fake being happy and except what is going on.

A lot think it is a stretch that the wedding was all a pre planned thing to help push a narrative but look at BG. At the beginning of BG it seemed crazy to think they faked a story and changed louis whole image to make it seem like he got some girl pregnant and had him fake having a kid to hide his sexuality but it became clear that's what happened. I get called crazy and delusional on other apps daily for thinking that kid is not louis saying they wouldn't do that to him louis wouldn't allow this to happen BUT IT DID bc he isn't free and has NO say it what happens So this wedding being fake just to push a PR stunt relationship and the H is good friends with Jeff narrative is not a stretch.

There are articles that prove Jeff was already married to his wife since at least February 2020, we have more pics and articles about Harry and Olivia then of the married couple, why were there paps or drowns at a small intimate wedding of someone who isn't well known when big wedding of big celebs have no pap pics and if it was a guest list of only around 20 then why was Harry allowed a plus one date and heck why was Harry himself who is just a coworker allowed at this small wedding? If you were the couple you would JUST have immediate family and maybe your closes friend not a coworker and their 3 week gf. I think this was all an massive stunt to push a couple narratives.

One think I never get is the fans who when anything happenes stunt wise with louis they say this is all a stunt, it's fake, he has no control over anything and he's no where near free but when this happened with harry they go he's fully free, start thinking maybe Jeff and him are friends, and saying they wouldn't go to this extreme to push a narrative. NEITHER Louis or Harry are anywhere near free! I'd say the Azoffs have as much if not more power then Cowbell ever did.

My thoughts [more directed towards twitter stans here] hypothetically speaking if this was some kind of wedding ceremony for Cowbell and Louis was there everyone on twitter would say the ceremony is a stunt to make them look like their still friends after Syco parting. Just bc Harry gets promo or more response from GP, and people knowing his name then Louis doesn't mean he is anymore free then Louis. Realistically no one in the industry under Sony is free every aspect of their life is monitored and controlled.

All of what I have seen and read shows this stunt worked well even better then BG did bc I do see some fans who now think H might actually be friends with Jeff, the GP thinks he sleeps with people to get roles, the media are making jokes about this "new relationship", some henries are making jokes about him being a homewrecker. In ZERO WAY was this a good idea at all and helps NO ONE! The people running what happens to harry need to be careful bc if they keep going as they do soon EVERYONE [except henries who think he's hot] will hate him and not want to hear about him ever again. That is if this mess didn't do that already bc this stunt rubbed so many people the wrong way I wouldn't be surprised if people said I'm done I'm leaving I can't with this anymore.

I will say for myself I have been around almost 10 years supporting them hoping one day we will see them be free and happy. They are trying hard, harder then ever to get rid of us. They WANT us gone but I won't leave, I can't go anywhere not when I've been apart of this for so long already. I'm here, I'm staying, I WILL stay until they are out and free even if that takes another 5 to 10 years.

Honest Eyes: Part 4

So, I know it’s been a minute, but I hope someone is still interested in this series.  I have some ideas that I’m really excited about!  I want to shout out @bribe-the-door again for giving me the guts to do this!  

Jane twisted around in her seat.  Next to her Bex was snoring and Jane just couldn’t take it anymore.  “Hey” she whispered lightly knocking on her friend’s head, “This flight is boring by myself.”  Bex kept sleeping.  Jane sighed and leaned back, in a few more hours they would be landing in L.A. and then who knows what would happen.  John hadn’t come right out and said who they were going to do film work for.  

He had sat in his chair eyes bright “Now it’s a small documentary about a musician creating an album Sony is hoping will blow up.  They want a small low-key team so that there’s no unnecessary attention, and that’s why I think you girls will do excellent!”  Bex and Jane shared a glance before turning back to him.  “Bex, you just know when to turn the camera on, and that’s 70% of a project like this.”  He then turned to Jane, “And you, you are great at putting people at their ease, and getting them to talk and you have a good story-telling instinct.  I don’t have any doubt in my mind that the two of you will absolutely kill putting this together.”  He leaned back in his chair, quite contented with himself, nodding, “This is exactly what Jeff needs and he doesn’t even know it yet,” he looked up at the girls, “So you’re in right?”

Jane and Bex held hands as they fought their way away from the LAX baggage claim.  They hurried to leave the airport, keeping their eyes peeled for their ride.  “What are we looking for again?”  Jane huffed as she dragged her suitcase behind her.

“A woman with red curly hair and a sign that says ‘Welcome J B’ ”

“Good thing they didn’t put ‘em the other way around.” Jane quipped.  Bex shot a raised eyebrow towards her as they continued to hurry through the crowds.  Eventually, they saw who they were looking for.  

“Hey, there, I’m Carla”  the woman instantly put them at ease, “I’ll be taking you to where you’ll be staying.  Are you guys jet lagged or anything?”  They barely managed to shake their heads no before Carla had somehow magically whisked them out to a car and loaded up their luggage.  After a brief discussion, it was decided that they should definitely get something to eat before heading to their final destination.  There were a few more pit stops as one girl would realize they “Forgot that!”  or “Should have remembered, but...”  laughing they finally settled in for the final leg of the car ride completely worn out.  The girls felt themselves drifting off in spite of themselves, waking up only when they sensed that the motion of the car had stopped.  

Jane felt her eyes start to flutter open slowly, as Bex peeled herself off of the seat, there was a man standing on the steps of a huge house, Bex looked at him slowly walking towards them, her eyebrows knit together like she was two steps away from winning a game of Clue.  Carla apparently noticed her face as well, because she nodded towards the man with a smile, “That’s Jeff, he’s a nice boy.”  Bex’s eyebrows shot up, apparently, that was the only clue she needed for whatever question was in her mind.  Carla handed them both a business card, “I wrote my cell phone number on the back, just in case you girls need anything, I know it can be difficult to be in a new place.”  She smiled maternally at them before Jeff opened the door and burst their bubble of warmth.  

“Hey,” he smiled brightly, “I’m Jeff, do you need help getting your bags?”  They tumbled out of the car after him and made their way into the house.  “Don’t worry about meeting anyone tonight,” he continued as they dragged their bags up a flight of stairs, “Pretty much everyone has settled in for the night already, and we’re sure you’re tired after your flight.”  He led them into a beautiful suite.  They were almost too tired to notice how nice it was, almost.  Jeff smiled and said, “Through that door is the bathroom you two will share, you can get to the other bedroom through there as well, the rooms are identical except this one has a balcony.”  He began making his way out of the room, “Help yourselves to whatever’s in the kitchen if you get hungry, and otherwise, we’re all excited to get to know you better in the morning!”

There were a few moments of quiet squabbling before Jane ended up in the room with the balcony.  The girls took showers and tried to calm down, but found themselves curled up together on Jane’s bed whispering to each other.  Bex’s eyes danced as she leaned in close to Jane, “I know who we’re shooting for,”  she wiggled her eyebrows.

“Oh shut up, you do not.”  Jane rolled her eyes, but Bex persisted.  “I do to, and I’ll prove it to you, it’s Harry Styles.”  Jane sat in deep thought for a few minutes before saying, with great uncertainty, “He was one of the ones from One Direction right?”  

Bex started hitting her with a pillow, “I can’t believe I’m friends with such a music snob!” she wheezed out in between laughs.  Jane laughed too tired to defend herself.  “I’m sure you’re right Bex.” she finally said as they collapsed back onto the mattress, half asleep again.

The girls opened their eyes, blinking into the yellow sunrise.  They were momentarily disoriented, but soon remembered where they were.  They crept down into the kitchen and then back upstairs with some fruit and granola bars.  They were quite hungry but the idea of eating in front of a house of strangers before swiping on some mascara seemed too intimidating.  Ad they sat on the floor munching Jane remembered what Bex had said the night before.

“Harry Styles, eh?”

“Mmmmhhh, what about him?”

“Do you really think that that’s who our boss is?”

Bex shrugged her shoulders I bit down on her apple.  “Can’t believe you had to think before you placed him as being in One Direction.”  She started typing on her phone.  I’m gonna pull up a picture of him, so you know what kind of guy you’re working with.”

Jane rolled her eyes, “If you’re right.”  Bex handed her phone to Jane.  Jane could hardly believe her eyes.  “Bex!” She hissed, “Bex, Bex, Bex, ooohhhh noooo.....”  Bex had immediately straightened up and started running her hand over Jane’s shoulders.  Jane had crumpled inward and the phone slid out of her hand.  She lifted her head up to Bex.  “Do you remember the Bukowski boy I told you about?”

“Yeah, what about...”  Bex’s voice trailed off as she glanced back at her phone on the floor.  “No,” she said in a hushed voice, “You can’t be for real.” but Jane just sat there, nodding her head.  “What did you say to him exactly?”  Bex asked, “When you were in the bookshop?”

“I told him, that I hope a goose the size of a squirrel shits in his coffee.”

Bex barely contained her laughter.  “Y’know, I’m sure he doesn’t remember.”  Uncertainty was written all over her face and voice as the two girls finished their morning routine and headed downstairs.

Harry squinted.  He was holding a kiwi in his hand and Jeff was talking to him.  Manager/Friend Jeff, not Producer/Friend Jeff.  Important difference.  Harry continued down this mental path until he noticed that the room around him had gone silent.  He looked up at Jeff’s unamused face and asked, “Can I help you mate?”

“Why are you zoning out so much today H?  You’re looking at that kiwi like it just told you some unwanted news.”

Harry shrugged, “Maybe it did, ‘bout to have to do the honorable thing and marry this kiwi.”

Jeff rolled his eyes as Harry devolved into little giggles. “As I was saying your film crew, well it’s two people, got in last night.  They came highly recommended, so I suggest making a good impression for at least the first few minutes you see them.  They should be coming down any minute now I expect--”

As if they had planned and rehearsed ahead of time an impossibly tall girl, followed by an impossibly short girl, walked down the stairs.  As soon as Harry saw the second girl, he froze.  It was her.  The girl from the bookshop.  The girl who hated Bukowski and liked to read people’s margin notes.  Right now she was looking everywhere but at Harry.  He figured that she must assume that if she didn’t look directly at him he’d simply stop existing at some point.  

Jeff stepped forward and shook both the girls’ hands as they exchanged morning pleasantries.  He then turned to the group, which included the other Jeff, Alex, Ryan, Tyler, and Harry.  “All right guys! This is Rebecca, but I’ve been instructed to call her Bex and Jane.  Bex is going to be our key camera person, and Jane is in charge of turning the messy, nonlinear, album writing process into a story people would actually want to sit down and watch.”  The men all gave them a warm greeting.

Alex had a dash of mischief in his eye when asked, “Were you girls fans of one direction?  Will you be able to concentrate working with Harry?”  Even though it was meant to be a joke the air in the room became immediately stiffer after he said it.  

The space around Bex seemed to loosen up first though, as per usual.  She tossed her hair over her shoulder, “Yeah, my sister and I are both massive One Direction fans.”  She grabbed an orange out of the fruit bowl and started peeling it, “But, I’m gay so I won’t get distracted.  Now, Jane,”  she motioned toward her friend with her head, “Isn’t gay.  But given that until last night when I looked him up on my phone, she thought that Harry Styles was a bad pun, I think we’ll be fine.”

Manager Jeff nodded and smiled.  “I knew you would fit right in.”  Harry felt a streak of pride as he noticed his friend give Alex a slightly dirty look.  “I’ll check on you guys next week!”  Jeff yelled, and his footsteps faded out of the kitchen.  

Harry looked back, the bookstore girl, no, Jane, was looking around.  She was absorbing her surroundings like a sponge.  Bex, on the other hand, seemed immediately comfortable asserting herself.  “So, I don’t know what kind of schedule you guys normally keep around here, but I think the best thing would be if we do our first day out here without filming.  I’ll keep my camera handy just in case something brilliant happens.  We’ll be as in or out of the background as you think is appropriate.”  

Producer/friend Jeff nodded and he and Bex started talking over some more details of how filming would work.  Harry made his way over to Jane.  He was just about to say something when she spun around, “I’ve gotta get my notebook,” she blurted.  Harry watched her retreating figure, then glanced down at his hand, remembering for the first time in several minutes he’d been walking around with a kiwi.

My Favorite Performances of 2016

These are the 15 movie roles this year I most felt deserved highlighting. Man, there were some great roles this year, introduction, introduction, introduction, how many words does this have to be? You don't care and I certainly don't. On to the list!(Note: except for the top two, this list is in no particular order).

Glen Powell (Everybody Wants Some!!) The entire cast of Richard Linklater’s spiritual follow-up to "Dazed and Confused" is one riotous bundle of joy (and a cure for the usually cliche portrayal of college kids), but Glen Powell's Finnegan is by far the standout. The scene that makes his character comes at a party for the "artsy fartsy" crowd when, after encouraging a freewheeling spirit of sex, booze, drugs and rock 'n' roll throughout the film, he actually gets for real hurt when his proteges crash his chances with a girl he happens to like. Finnegan is on the cusp of adulthood and leadership heading into one of the most tumultuous decades of American history, but he's not quite there yet...and it's the leftover, subtle vulnerabilities of the kid during his last days of youth that make him so unbelievably endearing. If there's any justice in the world, EWS!! will do for him what Dazed and Confused did for...well, most of the cast.

Tilda Swinton (A Bigger Splash) The (in my opinion, overblown) controversy over Swinton's Doctor Strange role sadly overshadowed her performance in this Fellini-esque story of beautiful people behaving in decidedly un-beautiful ways. Playing a major, David Bowie-esque popstar who has gone near-mute from the stress of living in public, Swinton has few lines but somehow manages to steal the show from a simmering Matthias Schoenaerts and a manic Ralph Fiennes. Being mostly robbed of the ability to speak, Swinton has to convey a massive range of emotions largely with body language---a task she accomplishes with all the skill you'd expect from one of the world's greatest actresses.

Natalie Portman (Jackie) Frail and tough, honest and veiled, open and censoring---Portman's portrayal of the most famous First Lady in American history is riddled with contradictions that, in her hands, become a coherent character. She can sink to the depths of unbearable anguish at a moment's notice, and five minutes later it is as if nothing very bad had happened. Yet, there's always something boiling under the surface...perhaps an understanding that history will forever place "JFK's wife" next to her name, whatever else she may do with her life. At times, Portman seems to barely hold it all in, yet when we leave the theater she is still a mystery. Maybe that's how it should be.

Joel Edgerton (Loving) Rarely does more go unsaid or understood than passes behind the face of Joel Egderton as Richard Loving, one half of the married couple whose simple wish to live in their home state of Virginia dealt a death blow to laws banning interracial marriage in the United States. Edgerton says little, and when he does it is in as few words as possible...every one of which speaks his entire mind. Key to the performance, though, are scenes of him simply sharing intimate moments with wife Mildred. At a time when the stereotype of the traditonal American husband and father of yesteryear is often held up for all the wrong reasons, Edgerton's performance is crucial.

Emma Stone (La La Land) Until near the end, the music is the driving force of La La Land. Then someone asks the character of Mia to "tell a story", and Emma Stone delivers one of the best scenes of her career. The strength of the "Audition" number redefines what has come before for the character, and solidifies her as both someone we can really root for, and the personification of dreamers, however hopeless they might be. The final look she gives Ryan Reynolds in the film speaks more than a page of dialogue ever could.

Viola Davis (Fences) Before the era of feminism, there was an unspoken agreement between married couples in the U.S.: a wife was to put up with her husband's shit, even when he was full to bursting with it. It was hard to pick one of the two main performances in "Fences" to single out, but ultimately Davis's simmering cauldron is the heart of the story, enabling her to both survive and love life with her deeply, deeply flawed husband. Unlike Denzel Washington, who gets to vomit forth an endless stream of anger throughout the film, Davis is tasked with saving her one great outburst for when it is most needed and has the most impact, creating a scene the trailers should not have featured; it should have been allowed to burst on audiences like water from a broken dam, rolling over everything in its path. Five minutes later, she's calm again, but she's also a different woman...or maybe just another woman who was hiding behind the first all along.

Sunny Pawar (Lion) The trailers all emphasize the adult Saroo's search for his home, but the bulk of the movie is taken up with a young Saroo getting lost in the first place, and Dev Patel is overshadowed by 8-year-old Sunny Pawar...not an easy feat. Like Quvenzhane Wallis and Jacob Tremblay, Pawar takes a role that could easily have been phoned in (since we have natural sympathy for kids) and makes little Saroo into an enormously relatable character, a lost boy whose stomping ground is no Neverland. It isn't any wonder the filmmakers keep coming back to him in flashbacks after his character is grown. He's the heart of the film.

Hailee Steinfeld (Edge of Seventeen) I swear, my generation moons over the era of John Hughes High School comedies so much they seem to forget that being awkward, out-of-place and unable to wait for the day after graduation day isn't unique to them. Every year we get a handful of largely unheralded comedies about that very topic, and Hailee Steinfeld's performance as a morbid, confused and, yes, aggressive (bad female! bad!) teen who openly discusses her sex life, alcohol habits and dark, dark, dark humor elevates "Edge of Seventeen" to the top of the pack. With acerbic wit, pinpoint aim, and unflinching pessimism, Nadine Franklin manages to skewer not just every aspect of High School life but many of life in general. The only target she routinely misses? Herself.

Kate Beckinsale (Love & Friendship) It is exceedingly rare that a woman in the movies can be aggressive and acidic at the same time. Kate Beckinsale's Lady Susan is such a character. It is impossible for all but the most ardent feminists to actually like her, and you'd never want to be drawn into her poisonous circle of rumor, manipulation, innuendo and life-destroying gossip, but you have to admire her for taking charge of her own life at a time when women were tasked with hosting guests, looking pretty and shutting up. These days, she'd almost certainly be described as a sociopath, wrecking lives for her whim and amusement, yet you can't look away. She's the year's best villain...or is she?

Ben Foster (Hell or High Water) Chris Pine's well-meaning father is our anchor to this story of two desperate brothers in hard times, but Ben Foster is the anarchic, destructive force that keeps our eyes glued to the screen. Whereas Pine's dad doesn't think of himself as criminal and Jeff Bridges's sheriff has spent far too much time watching old westerns, Foster knows exactly what he is: a violent criminal whose psycopathy he might be able to turn to his brother's aid in one last blaze of glory. There's never really a question of him surviving the story; he's not a man, he's a storm, and he's here to rage harder than he ever has before blowing himself out.

Naomie Harris (Moonlight) Talk about embodying multiple people in one role. Harris plays mother to a young, gay black man at three different stages of his life, but she's not the kind of perfect mom the movies prefer. She's a drug addict at a time when the War on Drugs refused to treat such people with any sort of humanity, and she's got a temper to match the times; when she screams hurtful words at her own son, the decision to remove the audio from the scene makes her come off as near-demonic. Simplicity, though, isn't really what Moonlight deals in, and there are layers and regrets to her revealed as the film goes on. Her final scene asks a rather important question: should any time be too late to be forgiven?

Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) For the most part, horror will forever be considered beneath the notice of those who hand out accolades, which means even if you turn in one of the most startling performances of the year, it doesn't really count if it's in this genre. That's a shame, because unless you count a tiny, uncredited role from 2014, Taylor-Joy makes the most impressive film debut of any actress this year. Called upon to do things involving animal blood and demonic possession that a more image-concerned person might spurn, she handles the role of a teenage girl whose family is being assailed by the forces of hell by taking it all absolutely seriously, which is essential; any hint that she thinks anything she's doing is silly, and the film falls apart. There's reason to question whether anything supernatural is really happening in the New England wilderness of the late 1600's, but no reason to doubt the strength of Taylor-Joy's performance.

Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) Not everything has to be so serious, something Deadpool would probably remind you of right before delivering a kick straight to your kibbles and bits. As the star, producer and driving force behind the hilariously raunchy R-rated superhero flick, Reynolds is the most eminently watchable and entertaining a comic hero has been outside the suit since Robert Downey Jr. swaggered into the Iron Man armor. Mel Brooks once famously described his films as rising below vulgarity, and whether Reynolds is taking time out to break the fourth wall or making incredibly lewd comments at his blind, elderly, female roommate, he's bringing the spirit of "Blazing Saddles" to a genre that sometimes really needs to get over itself. In a year where "Batman vs. Superman" took itself more seriously than a second heart attack, Reynolds's Merc with a Mouth is the filthy, over-the-top cure the doctor ordered.

And my top two performances, starting with my choice for Best Actress:

Isabelle Huppert (Elle)

In arguably the most challenging role this year, which comes in certainly the most challenging film, Huppert plays a woman who, after being raped, plays a cat-and-mouse game with the rapist. Whether she is trying to catch him or get caught again is another question. The role was turned down by multiple more well-known actresses, before being taken by Huppert, who deserves to be more well-known outside her native France. Key to her performance is that her character is not altogether very likable, and if she were not a victim of a heinous crime, you'd have a real difficult time feeling empathy for her. That takes far more guts, I think, than playing out brutal scenes of assault, since we tend to demand our heroines be pure as the driven snow.

Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)

He's been turning in the best work he possibly can in every role he's had, big or small, for two decades, always overshadowed in fame by his older brother, but this year is Casey's. Angry, violent, adrift and bereft, Lee Chandler is a man with no purpose in a world that demands every man have one, not that he grasps himself on that level: he's simply a man who has been struck over and over until nothing but armor remains. Forced to deal with the issue of custody for his nephew after his brother dies, he portrays a truth no man wants to face: not all of us are cut out for responsibility. Despite this, Affleck walks a fine line, making Lee simultaneously a jerk and someone you'd really like to see come out on top. Unfortunately, as Lee well knows, the world just isn't that simple.

Honorable mentions: I limited my list to 15, and even after expanding from ten it was still difficult. There are lots of great roles that didn't make the cut, and here are the ten that really gave the winners a run for their money, in one big list. If you don't see your favorite, remember: it doesn't necessarily mean they weren't good, just that I can't possibly list them all.

‘He’s the linchpin’: Buttigieg blocking all roads to the nomination

Democrats’ most current presidential debate revealed a new truth prospects deal with simply over six weeks before the Iowa caucuses: All roads to the nomination run straight through Pete Buttigieg.

For months, dispute within the Democratic primary had lurched forward haphazardly, with hits on Joe Biden falling flat and lines of attack among other candidates seeming to come and go quickly. But in Buttigieg, 2020 lastly discovered its common denominator– and a typical target for many everybody else on the debate stage Thursday night.

Buttigieg’s transformation into a piñata did not come simply due to the fact that he has risen in polls of Iowa and New Hampshire. Joe Biden inhabits the party’s moderate lane, and Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren appeal to progressives, however Buttigieg is threatening to all of them with his ideologically moderate platform but, demographically, progressive profile: young, gay and– as he will remind you consistently– not of Washington.

” He’s the linchpin,” said Sue Dvorsky, a previous Iowa Democratic Celebration chairwoman who had actually endorsed Sen. Kamala Harris prior to she dropped out of the race. “He’s the linchpin due to the fact that he remains in the middle.”

The South Bend, Ind., mayor doesn’t command much attention in nationwide surveys. He’s running first in recent surveys of the very first caucus state of Iowa and in 2nd place in the first main state of New Hampshire, according to the most current Real Clear Politics average.

With the exception of Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire former New york city City mayor who is mainly skipping the very first 4 nominating states, every candidate outside of the top tier is counting on a breakout performance in Iowa to keep their campaigns afloat. That consists of Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, another moderate whose pummeling of Buttigieg on Thursday provided new life to her flagging candidacy.

On Friday, she was arranged to begin a bus trip in Iowa, with drop in 27 counties in the state.

” Clearly Klobuchar believes she needs to go after Pete” to enhance her position in Iowa, stated Douglas Herman, a Democratic strategist in Los Angeles. “He is likewise at the top of the moderate lane in Iowa, so Klobuchar needs to beat him with those citizens.”

Given the brief time up until Iowa and the high stakes of carrying out well there, Herman said Klobuchar “requires to move even more. The relentless attacks on Pete whenever she could get an elbow toss in.”

After the argument, Buttigieg provided the predictable evaluation of the beating he took, telling CNN that attacks must be expected “when you’re doing well.” And Dave Nagle, a previous congressman and Iowa state Democratic Party chairman, suggested Buttigieg is a victim of his own, possibly too-early success.

” It’s not an advantage to fume in November, because you become a target,” Nagle stated.

But Sanders and Warren, both far ahead of Buttigieg nationally yet secured a tight fight with him in Iowa, are increasingly utilizing Buttigieg as a foil.

Taking on the area of a Buttigieg charity event in Napa Valley this past weekend– in what Warren called a “red wine cavern filled with crystals”– Sanders and Warren both released a prolonged debate-stage assault on Buttigieg over his fundraising. Even Andrew Yang piled on, saying that with universal basic earnings, his signature proposal, more ladies would run for office “because they don’t need to go shake the money tree in the wine cave.”

The hits are most likely to get only harder moving forward, as Buttigieg himself recommended in a fundraising e-mail on Friday.

” Last night, I took part in the last Democratic primary dispute of the year,” he composed. “If you viewed, you saw the project you and I are constructing come under attack.”

Buttigieg went on to defend his fundraising, stating that while “great deals of our competitors attacked the way we’re building this campaign … what they are stopping working to recognize is that we’re developing a formidable organization. One that can take on Donald Trump and his allies– and win.”

Peter Leo, chairman of Carroll County Democrats in Iowa, who is backing Warren in the caucuses, declared Buttigieg appeared unprepared and came off as “exceptionally rehearsed and exceptionally inauthentic” throughout much of the dispute, after surviving the November dispute without taking substantial attacks.

” This was the guy who was my No. 2, and I do not even recognize him anymore,” Leo said, including that the “wine cavern” is now planted firmly in the political lexicon.

Faiz Shakir, Sanders’ project manager, stated he anticipates Sanders’ campaign over the “next few weeks” to start pushing its contrast with other Democrats more forcefully– “sharing why Biden and Buttigieg and Warren are not as preferably placed as he is” to run against President Donald Trump.

Jeff Weaver, the longtime Sanders consultant, likewise suggested the project’s contrast effort will be wider than simply Buttigieg. He noted that Sanders is running an ad in Iowa stressing that he is the only prominent candidate running a completely grassroots-funded campaign– differentiating him not simply from Biden and Buttigieg, but likewise Warren.

Still, Weaver, who used a Tee shirts identified “PetesWineCave.com,” couldn’t withstand jabbing at Buttigieg. Inquired about Buttigieg’s remark in the debate that he was the poorest candidate on phase, he stated, “He will not seek this project, I’m sure.”

For months, conflict within the Democratic primary had lurched forward haphazardly, with hits on Joe Biden falling flat and lines of attack among other candidates seeming to come and go quickly. But in Buttigieg, 2020 finally found its common denominator — and a common target for most everyone else on the debate stage Thursday night.

Buttigieg’s transformation into a piñata did not come simply because he has risen in polls of Iowa and New Hampshire. His position is unique because the imperative to stamp him out is so wide-ranging. Joe Biden occupies the party’s moderate lane, and Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren appeal to progressives, but Buttigieg is threatening to all of them with his ideologically moderate platform but, demographically, progressive profile: young, gay and — as he will remind you repeatedly — not of Washington.
